The Bowls Player character jug modeled by Stanley J. Taylor and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, between 1991-1995. Bowls, or lawn bowling, is a very popular sport with the retired community in Britain and its former colonies. The game takes place on a velvety-textured grass green, contested between two teams consisting of any number between one and four players. The object of the game is to deliver biased bowls closer to the jack, the small white ball, than your opponent to earn the right to score points. The player or team with the closest bowl to the jack earns one point, or "shot," for each bowl closer to the jack than the nearest opponent bowl. The bowl, jack and measure are all required equipment for the sport. Sir Francis Drake is reputed to have been playing bowls when the Spanish Armada was sighted in the English Channel, preferring to finish his game rather than jump to the call for arms. A bowl, jack and measure form the handle of the jug. A colorway is known to exist.
