Swordsman toby jug - Artone Pottery circa 1980

Swordsman toby jug produced by Artone Pottery of Burslem, England, circa 1980. A swordsman is a person who is very good at swordplay or fencing. They must be able to move quickly and nimbly, changing direction and position to evade attacks and launch their own. A good swordsman must have a keen sense of timing and distance “measure”. They must know when to attack, when to defend, and when to retreat. Note the hilt of the sword below the swordsman's left hand.
