Reginald J. Mitchell toby jug in a gray colorway produced by Bairstow Manor Pottery of Hanley, England, circa 1995. Reginald Joseph Mitchell CBE (1895-1937) was a British aircraft designer who worked for the Southampton aviation company Supermarine from 1916 to 1936, when he was forced to stop working due to illness. He is best remembered for designing racing seaplanes such as the Supermarine S.6B, and the Supermarine Spitfire. This prototype toby jug celebrates the 100th year anniversary of Mitchell's birth in Stoke-on-Trent. Mitchell is seated on a cloud with spitfire planes soaring in and out of it. He is holding a figure of Mercury in front of him and a caliper forms the handle of the jug.
