Ralph Wood character jug LE - Tony Wood Studio 1991

Ralph Wood character jug produced by Tony Wood of Fenton, England, in 1991 in a limited edition for Scottish Direct. Ralph Wood (circa 1715-1772), called the "Miller of Burslem", was apprenticed to John Astbury in 1730 and subsequently worked with Thomas Whieldon, learning the manufacture of colored glazes. He began producing his own salt-glazed wares in 1754 at Burslem. By 1760 Ralph Wood was making extremely well-modeled figures with colored glazes. He was among the first of English potters to impress his name on his wares, and he is credited with introducing the Toby jug, his first model being Toby Philpot about 1772.
