Pantalone toby jug - Wasmuel circa 1895

Pantalone majolica toby jug produced by Wasmuel of Wasmuel, Belgium, circa 1895. Pantalone is one of the most important characters in commedia dell'arte, a form of Italian theater dating back to the 16th century. Pantalone is an older, greedy and intelligent merchant of Venice who is typically cast as the parent of a star-crossed lover. He works diligently to keep his daughter apart from her lover. A tree branch forms the handle of this jug. Pantalone was designed by Wasmuel's principal designer Frederic Thurner. This is a rare jug.
