Monkey character jug - Fielding & Company circa 1910

Monkey character jug produced by Fielding & Company of Stoke-on-Trent, England, circa 1910. This is a well-dressed monkey, ready for an evening out on the town with friends, perhaps eating dinner at their favorite restaurant before going to the theater. It is likely a political commentary on Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution that was panned and mocked in the early 20th century. Today, Darwin has been described as one of the most influential figures in human history. The jug has an impressed 86 mark and is stamped "Rd No 526356" which dates the registration of the design to 1908. The jug is also known in a treacle colorway.
