Mark Twain character jug colorway modeled by Eric Griffiths and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in 1986. Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910) is better known to the world by his nom de plume, Mark Twain. An apprentice printer, journalist, lecturer and author, Twain considered his days as a Mississippi steamboat pilot as the most influential of his life. Indeed his pseudonym is a Mississippi river cry given by pilots and leadsmen to indicate the two-fathom mark when taking soundings in the river. Twain's observations from his time spent on the river furnished much of the raw material for his literary works, of which "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and its sequel, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", are the most renowned. The ingenious Tom and his friend, Huckleberry, race through these nostalgic tales of boyish exploits in which the author combines humor and burlesque with realism to paint a portrait of the flowering frontier life of the Mississippi. Other well-known works include "The Prince and the Pauper" and "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court". A quill and ink pot form the handle of this jug.
