Kirin toby jug - Wasmuel circa 1900

Kirin majolica toby jug produced by Wasmuel of Wasmuel, Belgium, circa 1900. A Kirin is a mythical creature originating in the Far East in the 5th century BC. He has hooved feet, a body shaped like an ox and covered in scales, a flowing mane and horns. Kirin's are said to appear with the passing of a sage or ruler. The Kirin was designed by Wasmuel's principal artist Frederic Thurner.
