Hova Monkey toby jug - France circa 1905

Hova Monkey majolica toby jug produced in France circa 1905. This worried monkey has the word Hova impressed on the front of the jug. The Hova or free commoners were on of the three historical castes in pre-colonial Madagascar. This jug is a derogatory representation of the Hova people who resisted the French colonization of Madagascar in the 1880s and 1890s. The monkey's tail curls up to form the handle of the jug. The jug has the initials YT impressed on the bottom.
