Hannah Barlow character jug modeled by Andy Moss and produced by Kevin Francis Ceramics of Stoke-on-Trent, England, in a 1994 limited edition of 350. Hannah Bolton Barlow (1851 - 1916) was an artist who painted pottery for Doulton & Co. at their newly established art pottery studio in Lambeth, London. Doulton's Lambeth studio allowed the decorators to sign or monogram their work, which allows many pieces to be attributed to individuals, though often more than one person worked on a piece. Hannah, after studying at Lambeth School of Art, worked for Doulton from 1871, becoming the first female artist to work there. Hannah specialized in painting horses and other animals, which were often incised with a blade, the lines being then colored and often paint added elsewhere. One of Hannah's large hand-decorated vases featuring an elk forms the handle of the jug.
