George Whitfield toby jug - Poskochin Factory circa 1840

George Whitfield toby jug produced at Poskochin Factory in Morye, Russia, circa 1840. George Whitfield (1714-1770) was an Anglican cleric and evangelist who was one of the founders of Methodism and the evangelical movement. Clutching his hat to his chest with his left hand, the lantern he is holding in his right hand is symbolic of his lifelong dedication to proclaiming the Light of the World. This jug is modeled after the George Whitefield toby jug produced in Staffordshire in the late 1700s.
