Gaucho toby jug - La Riojana circa 1960

Gaucho toby jug produced by La Riojana in the La Rioja Province of Argentina circa 1960. A gaucho is a skilled horseman, the cowboy of the South American pampas. The figure of the gaucho is a folk symbol of Argentina, Uruguay, Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, and the south of Chilean Patagonia. Sitting on a stump, this gaucho is wearing the traditional Argentinian dress with a poncho slung over one shoulder, the baggy bombacha trousers, and a distinctive belt with silver coins.
