Frowning Man character jug extra large - Austria circa 1925

Frowning Man majolica extra large size character jug produced in Austria circa 1925. One of the many Brownie characters created by Palmer Cox, the Frowning Man is obviously unhappy with recent events or his lot in life in general. Hopefully the future brings something he can once again smile about. Palmer Cox created a merry band of Brownies who travelled by night to have fun and do good deeds. The first Brownies story, "The Brownies' Ride", appeared in the February 1883 issue of "St. Nicholas". Palmer wrote 25 books before his death in 1924. The Brownies appeared in ads or packaging for everything from "sick stomach" remedies to the Kodak Brownie camera.
