Elizabeth Taylor character jug prototype designed by Eric Griffiths and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in 1989 commissioned by UK International Ceramics for a proposed Great Film Stars Collection. Elizabeth Rosemond "Liz" Taylor (1932-2011) was a British-born American actress. From her early years as a child star with MGM, she became one of the great screen actresses of Hollywood's Golden Age. As one of the world's most famous film stars, Taylor was recognized for her acting ability and for her glamorous lifestyle, beauty and distinctive eyes. Her child role of Velvet Brown in MGM's "National Velvet" made her a star at the age of twelve. At nineteen her seductress role in "A Place in the Sun" became the pivotal performance of her career. By 1960 she was the highest paid actress when she played the title role in "Cleopatra" as depicted in this jug. During her career she appeared in fifty-four movies and won two Academy Awards. Taylor's eight marriages included those to Nicky Hilton, Michael Wilding, Michael Todd, Eddie Fisher, and Richard Burton (twice). Her resulting celebrity from a string of successful films made her into a Hollywood icon, as she set the "gold standard" for Hollywood fame. Taylor received the French Legion of Honor medal in 1987 and in 2000 was named a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. In 2001, she received a Presidential Citizens Medal for her humanitarian work, most notably for helping to raise more than $200 million for AIDS research and bringing international attention and resources to addressing the epidemic. A "Cleopatra" filmstrip forms the handle of the jug.
