Coal Miner character jug - Onnaing circa 1905

Coal Miner majolica character jug produced by Onnaing of Onnaing, France, circa 1905, model number 797. The job of a coal miner is to extract coal from either surface mines or underground mines. They do this through a variety of methods, which today may involve operating heavy machinery, specialized tools, and even explosives. Some coal miners specialize in these different types of extraction through additional training and extensive experience. With his rope lantern and water bottle this Coal Miner is well prepared for another day of backbreaking labor.
