Beefeater lighter - Royal Doulton 1958 - 1973

Beefeater lighter designed by Harry Fenton and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, from 1958 to 1973. The Yeomen of the Guard, originally called Buffetiers, now popularly known as Beefeaters, were the first permanent Royal Guard formed at Henry VII's coronation in 1485. They originally consisted of Henry's private guard who had helped him to the throne. Today Beefeaters still wear the style of uniform from the Tudor period. The name Beefeater literally means well-fed servant. The Yeoman Warders, also members of the Yeomen of the Guard, are responsible for guarding the Tower of London. Their function today is largely ceremonial, and, dressed in their distinctive scarlet and gold coats, white ruffles and black hats, they are the main attraction at the ceremony of the keys and other state functions.
