Beefeater character jug large yellow handle - Royal Doulton circa 1950

Beefeater character jug in a large size with a yellow GR handle modeled by Harry Fenton and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, circa 1950. Beefeater is the popular name for the Yeomen Warders, ceremonial guardians of Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress the Tower of London. They are responsible for watching over prisoners in the Tower and safeguarding the British crown jewels, but in practice they act as tour guides and are a tourist attraction in their own right. They wear red and gold uniforms, white ruffles and black hats. Yeoman Warders, formed at Henry VIII's coronation, began guarding the Tower in 1485. The handle carriers the GR Royal cipher for George Rex. The yellow GR cipher handle dates this to the early production years. The Beefeater character jug with the yellow handle was made in three sizes with this being the largest along with small (D6233) and miniature (D6251) sizes.
