Armchair Toby stoneware ashpot in a black vest, black jacket and brown pants colorway, modeled by Harry Simeon and produced by Royal Doulton of Lambeth, England, between 1924 and 1929. An Armchair Toby is an Ordinary Toby featuring a common man of the time wearing 18th century clothing and a tricorn hat. He is seated in a comfortable armchair and holding an overflowing mug of ale in his right hand. Rather than a handle on the back, these derivatives have a hole in the back for depositing cigarette and cigar ashes. This ashpot was likely placed in the middle of the table or on the bar to collect cigarette or cigar ashes and butts.
